Attorney General Bill McCollum Joins Legal Brief With Nine Other Attorney Generals Asking California High Court to Halt May 15 Homosexual Marriage Ruling
May 30, 2008

(Orlando, FL) The Florida Family Policy Council applauds Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum for signing onto a legal brief with ten other state Attorney Generals asking the Supreme Court of California to stay or halt the decision rendered on May 15, 2008 to permit same sex marriages in California.

The brief filed on behalf of the * Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Educational Fund's motion, argues that there are huge ramifications of implementing the ruling prior to the November vote on a California constitutional amendment to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman.  General McCollum also argues that nationwide legal chaos will erupt if California exports the state's unresolved marriage issue beyond its borders and urges the Court that implementing this decision before the people of California have a chance to vote demonstrates a disrespect for the people and the democratic process.

Attorney Generals in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho,  Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah also signed onto the brief.

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is to be praised for his leadership and keen legal insight in signing onto this legal brief asking to have this raw act of judicial fiat stopped so that the people, and not judges can decide the issue of marriage in California.

The full text of the 15 page brief can be found in PDF HERE:

* Proposition 22 was a special statute enacted by the people of California which defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman which the California Supreme Court struck down in its recent decision. For More Information Contact: John Stemberger at Media@FLfamily.org
